The remarkable story of Schellenursli
«High up in the mountains, far, far away, there lived a little boy like you.» That is how the story begins. It is set in Guarda, an Engadine village in the canton of Graubünden. It is about the local custom of «Chalandamarz», which is recognised every year on the 1st of March. Tradition has it that in spring, the children of Engadine drive out winter with the loud peal of their bells.
The protagonist of the story, a little boy called Ursli, only has a little bell for the «Chalandamarz». He is teased by the other village boys and he does not like the fact that the following day he has to go at the end of the procession because his bell is the smallest. He remembers the big cowbell hanging in the summer alpine hut in the snowy pastures. Without further ado, he goes on the adventurous journey through the deep snow. Meanwhile, his parents worry about him, and as night draws in, the whole village goes out looking for little Ursli who has safely arrived at the summer alpine hut.
When Ursli shows up at home again the next day with the big bell, everyone sighs with great relief. Since Ursli now has the largest bell, he may finally lead the procession.
We also sell a mini book of this internationally successful story written by Selina Chönz and illustrated by Alois Carigiet.
